The protagonist is a mysterious and resourceful man who goes by the name "Zero." An expert on artworks, antiques and ancient artefacts, Zero is adept at rooting out their histories and uncovering any unusual qualities they possess. Because of this, he frequently gets called on to dispel "curses" and to both uncover and create forgeries. Zero is a man who will stop at nothing to see a job done, but he will also charge whatever fee he deems appropriate: it might be a billion dollars, or it might just be one.
Year 526 of the Liturgical Calendar. The world knew that witches existed, and that they practiced the notorious art of sorcery. Nevertheless, the world did not know anything about the study of magic. The story follows a half-man, half-beast mercenary; humans mockingly call his kind the "fallen beasts". He always dreamt of becoming a human, but one day, he met a witch who would change his life forever. "Do you desire a human form? Then be my escort, mercenary!" The witch introduced herself as "Zero", and explained that she was searching for a one-of-a-kind magical tome that bandits had stolen from her lair. Entitled "The Book of Zero", the grimoire supposedly contained valuable magical knowledge that could be used to effortlessly bring the world to its knees. Thus, in order to realize his dream of becoming a human, the mercenary must accompany Zero on her journey despite her being one of the witches he so loathed.

Gi Yuh is the leader of the strongest gang in his high school. He lives together with his younger sister, who seems to love him. When saving the beautiful Hana from a truck he instead gets injured and lies in coma for two weeks. During these two weeks he dives into a strange dreamworld and after his recovery he is not the same anymore. He regularly dreams about what seems to be a past him. To find out what happened to him he asked his teacher for help, who has friends, who deal with fortunetelling and supernatural powers. Here he finds the answer to his strange condition: He is supposed to be a "higher" ghost", who takes the position of a dead or soon-dying person.
Third in the ranking of the "Assassin Name" families of the underground assassin community, the "Zerozaki Ichizoku" is infamous for their indomitable family unity.
